There are many different ways to get involved at COASTAL SENIORS. Below is a list of programs where we utilize volunteers: Meals on Wheels
Meals on Wheels is a home-delivered meal service for seniors who are homebound and isolated due to illness, injury, recovery from a procedure or from frailness. Volunteer positions include:
Meal delivery driver: volunteer drivers pick meals up from our congregate site on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Each driver is assigned a route by our Coordinator; each route includes, on average, 5-6 seniors’ homes. Volunteer drivers must have a valid driver’s license and current vehicle insurance to participate.
Packaging meals: On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each week our staff cooks and packages each meal from our congregate sites. Volunteers in this position would help package each meal and prepare bags of food for each route. Meals are packaged in Point Arena on Mondays and Wednesdays and in Gualala on Tuesdays.
Community Lunches We are looking forward to starting up community lunches in March.
Lunches will be served Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday at the Veteran's Memorial Hall in Point Arena. Volunteers are always welcome to help with:
Salad bar prep: chopping and slicing fruits, vegetables and bread, making salad dressings and juices, and creating specialty salads.
Meal prep: assisting Kitchen Manager with preparing the hot meal of the day and dessert.
Dining room set-up and break-down: setting tables, making coffee, wiping down tables, stacking chairs, and various other tasks.
Clean-up: storing left-over food, washing dishes, sweeping, mopping, organizing refrigerators and pantries, etc. Although many people would prefer to fill other types of volunteer positions, this is where we normally come up short with help.
Outreach
Our outreach services include home-visits to check on the welfare of seniors, providing rides to and from local appointments when the bus is not available, assisting seniors with various tasks at home, delivering medical equipment, etc. Volunteer positions include:
Drivers: volunteer drivers are scheduled to pick seniors up from their homes and take them to and from local medical appointments based off of the availability of the driver and the needs of the senior. If interested in this position, your name and contact info would be added to our list of drivers with a brief description of where you are willing to drive and the days/times available.
Check-ins: we use volunteers (preferably those with nursing or other types of medical background) to check in on seniors who aren’t feeling well. We also provide welfare checks for seniors when their neighbors or families who normally check on them are not available.
Carpentry/ Simple House Repairs/ Odd Jobs: we use volunteers who are willing to donate their time and skills to help seniors with minor work around the house. Some examples of work performed by volunteers include: assisting seniors with moving, installing hand rails, changing light bulbs, changing batteries on smoke detectors, fixing door handles, etc. If interested in volunteering in this position, your name and contact info would be added to our list of volunteers, with a brief description of the tasks you are willing/able to perform.
Fundraisers
Fundraising is a very important part of what keeps our organization operating. Major fundraisers are held 3-4 times per year. Volunteers must well with others and portray a positive image for our organization. Possible volunteer positions during fundraisers include:
Serving Staff: volunteers interested in helping serve food during fundraisers must be able to work well with others in a past pace atmosphere while maintaining a positive attitude. Depending on the fundraiser, servers perform tasks like serving food, bussing tables, and pouring drinks, while communicating with kitchen volunteers who are preparing food.
Front Desk: Volunteers in this position greet guests when they arrive, check guests in and provide them with fundraiser materials (if necessary), and cash people out. A person interested in this sort of position must be able to count money quickly and accurately.
Set-up: If you enjoy setting up for parties and have a good eye for details, this is the position for you. Volunteers who help set up for an event perform duties like: arranging and setting tables, decorating, organizing auction tables (if necessary), and organizing front desk table and bar stations.
Clean-up: This is one of the most important positions we have to fill for each fundraiser. Those who help with clean up perform duties like: bussing tables, wiping down tables, folding chairs and tables, sweeping, helping with dishes, moping, cleaning counter surfaces.
Event volunteers: This position is for volunteers who wish to help perform various tasks during fundraisers. Tasks would include: selling raffle tickets, assisting servers and bar tenders, running minor errands (ex.: getting ice from the store), and more.
